Understanding the basics

What is exclusive breastfeeding?

Exclusive breastfeeding means feeding an infant breast milk only, without other foods or liquids, including water, except for oral rehydration solution or drops and syrups containing vitamins, minerals or medicines when needed.

Recommended for the first 6 months of life

The World Health Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, followed by the introduction of appropriate complementary foods while continuing breastfeeding up to two years or beyond.

Every family's circumstances are different. Mothers who have questions about feeding, medicines, milk supply or their baby's health should seek guidance from a qualified healthcare professional.
